Diminished scales are widely used in metal, jazz, and classical.

You are probably going to check this out because of the metal aspect. Anyway, it's a pretty evil sounding scale, after learning these you will recognize them instantly. A good rule for metal is if you are in E Minor, play them in Eb. The chicks will go crazy!
